Since November 2022, ICON has been constructing the walls of these homes using its Vulcan printer, a massive machine that weighs 4.75 tons and spans over 45 feet. This robotic printer builds homes layer by layer, using a specially formulated concrete mix called Lavacrete.
The homes in Wolf Ranch, ranging from 1,500 to 2,100 square feet, have three to four bedrooms and are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, making them both durable and efficient. 3D-printed homes are not only faster to build but also require fewer workers, minimizing waste and reducing construction costs. ICON’s Vulcan printer has streamlined the construction process, with a single robot and a small crew able to complete the walls of a house in just about 10 days.

For example, Lawrence Nourzad, a new resident in Wolf Ranch, describes his 3D-printed home as a “fortress,” confident in its ability to withstand severe weather, including tornadoes.
In addition to their durability, these homes offer excellent insulation. Despite the scorching Texas heat, the thick concrete walls keep the interior cool, reducing the need for constant air conditioning. However, the robust construction does present a challenge for wireless internet signals, which struggle to penetrate the thick walls. To counter this, many residents use mesh internet routers to ensure a strong and consistent connection throughout their homes.
