José Antonio Fernández Garza-Lagüera represents a new generation of leadership at FEMSA, one of Latin America’s most important business groups. As Chief Executive Officer, he is responsible for guiding a diversified organization with businesses spanning proximity retail, health, beverages and digital services.
His career within the company reflects a combination of operational experience, strategic thinking and a strong understanding of how large organizations can continue to evolve. Fernández Garza-Lagüera’s professional journey with FEMSA has been built across different areas of the business rather than through a single functional path. He joined Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, now part of HEINEKEN México, in 2011 as a Sales and Operations Manager. He later took on leadership responsibilities across several FEMSA businesses, including strategic planning at OXXO and FEMSA Comercio, as well as senior roles in FEMSA’s plastics, Coca-Cola FEMSA Central America, Spin and Proximity & Health operations.
One of the defining aspects of his career has been his involvement in FEMSA’s digital transformation. During his time leading Digital@FEMSA, he helped develop the company’s digital ecosystem and supported the growth of Spin, FEMSA’s fintech and loyalty platform. FEMSA’s 2023 leadership announcement highlighted his role in nurturing the digital business and preparing it for continued expansion.
This breadth of experience is particularly important for a company such as FEMSA. Its operations serve millions of consumers across different markets, making execution, customer understanding and adaptability essential to long-term success. Before becoming CEO, Fernández Garza-Lagüera led FEMSA Proximity & Health, overseeing an operation with more than 180,000 employees, over 28,000 proximity stores across 11 countries, more than 4,300 drugstores and more than 540 fuel stations in Mexico.
His leadership today comes at an important stage for FEMSA. The company has been reshaping its organization around three major business verticals: Retail, Coca-Cola FEMSA and Digital. The objective is not simply to grow in size, but to create a more focused organization capable of responding quickly to changing consumer expectations and market conditions.
The company’s latest reporting shows the scale of the platform Fernández Garza-Lagüera is leading. FEMSA’s 2025 integrated annual report highlights continued expansion in proximity retail, Coca-Cola FEMSA and digital services. During 2025, OXXO Mexico averaged approximately 13 million daily transactions, while FEMSA reported more than 10 million active Spin by OXXO users. The company also invested approximately $1.2 billion in capital expenditure during the year.
What makes his leadership journey notable is the variety of experiences behind it. Rather than approaching the CEO role from one narrow business perspective, he has worked across operations, planning, technology, retail and international markets. That experience gives him a practical view of the challenges involved in running a complex organization.
As FEMSA continues to expand and transform, his leadership will be closely connected to the company’s ability to remain relevant in a rapidly changing consumer and business environment.
Education has also played an important role in Fernández Garza-Lagüera’s professional foundation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from Tecnológico de Monterrey and an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business. His academic background complements his experience in operations, strategy and technology.
For FEMSA, the next chapter will require balancing growth with efficiency, innovation with disciplined execution, and technology with the company’s long-standing focus on customers. Fernández Garza-Lagüera’s career suggests that his approach is grounded in understanding the business from the inside and preparing it for what comes next.
